Weekly E-Devotional for 3/10/2009
Untitled 1
One of my favorite stories is about the two little boys who went into the
dentist’s office. They waited patiently and finally the dentist walked
into the waiting room. Before he could get a word out, the older of the
two boys spoke up and said, “Doctor, I want a tooth taken out, and I don’t want
any gas and I don’t want it to be deadened!” The dentist smiled and said,
“My, you’re quite a brave young man wanting me to take out a tooth without any
gas or deadening it.” The little boy said, “That’s right, ‘cause we’re in
a hurry.” “Well okay,” said the dentist, “but tell me, which tooth is it?”
The little boy turned to his smaller friend and said, “Show him your tooth,
Albert.”
It’s been my observation that the world is full of people like that.
People who want to see things happen and get things done, but who want someone
else to suffer the consequences and pay the price. That’s not the way it
works. What we discover is that when we get involved instead of passing
the buck, God works with us. We are in the Lenten season, a time for
reflection and growth. I’d suggest to you that one of the ways to really
grow is to go beyond yourself to make a tangible difference for someone else.
We have lots of complaining today, but too few doers. It’s easy to think
someone else ought to be responsible, but what about you? Yes, the real
joy in life comes as we dedicate ourselves to a worthy cause instead of assuming
someone else will accomplish it. As we journey through this holy season,
find a way to make a difference to at least one other person.
I’m praying and pulling for you.
